I asked her what type of soap she used and she remarked that it was lye soap. Really? For some reason, I had always thought lye soap was harsh and that we had made great leaps in society in improving our soap. Obviously that was a misconception. I liked the soap so well that I asked my sister if she would mind buying some for me on her next trip to town. She remarked that she had some extra and would give me a bar to take home. She handed me a bar of soap that was labeled, Grandma's Lye Soap, and I was surprised to discover that it was an Oklahoma company. However the label looked familiar and then it dawned on me that I had seen this soap listed with two different vendors. (I had always wondered why it was on a yarn/notion vendor's list.) So I ordered a couple of bars and gave out samples to the staff to try and they loved it! In fact, we loved it so much that we decided to stock it!

I always thought lye was dangerous but I discovered that lye is used in the making of all soaps. During the process of changing the oils into soaps, all of the lye is used up in the finished product and natural glycerin is created. Most commercial manufacturers remove much of the glycerin but Grandma's Lye Soap retains all the natural glycerin. You don't have to take our word for it - try it yourself! Each bar retails for $5.99.

Jane, aka happylady, recently knitted Wingspan, a free pattern on Ravelry. What a rhythmic fun pattern for beginner or advanced knitters. Wingspan has the look of doing wraps and turns but does not incorporate any. The pattern uses the knit stitch and the slip stitch to create the short rows and the 'wings' of the shawl. Jane knitted her Wingspan out of Noro Silk Garden Sock (only two skeins!) but any self-striping fingering-weight yarn would work. Jane has graciously loaned her sample to the store to be on display so you can see in person how beautiful this shawl is! I'm thinking this would be a great project for those evenings when I want to knit to relax but don't have the energy to concentrate on anything elaborate. Thanks, Jane, for sharing!

I had long forgotten the pattern and had to search the files of an old computer to find it for her. I didn't think much more about it until we started receiving the new yarns by Lucci and I thought about how pretty they would be knitted or crocheted into a light summer shawl and my old shawl pattern would fill the bill. The next hard decision was deciding which new yarn to use. After much deliberation, I decided to go with Lucatape. Using size 17 needles, the shawl knitted up in no time. Each hank of Lucatape contains 110 yards and retails for $24. Only one hank is needed for the shawl and the pattern is free with purchase.
